Approaches to Customer Insight
Talk | YCN Library — For our members

Specialists Chris Arning and Dr Adam Gill will be joining us in the YCN Library to discuss their differing approaches to gathering customer insights.

Customer insight is the driver behind many of the decisions an organisation makes, whether it's the development of new products and services, or the positioning of a campaign. The wealth of data that many companies now have on the behaviours and preferences of their customers has opened up the opportunity to understand these audiences better than ever before — and, in doing so, to more effectively meet their needs.

The key to getting this right, and to discovering insights that are truly valuable and potentially revelatory, is the approach that an organisation takes to analysing the data at their disposal.

On 11th September, we'll be inviting two customer insights specialists to the YCN Library to share their perspectives on two particular types of study:

Semiotics: the investigation into how meaning is created and communicated
Ethnography: the systematic study of people and cultures

Joining us will be:

Dr Adam Gill, founder of insight specialists Beyond Insights UK, which designs insights strategies and programmes to deliver increased sales, engagement and service or product transformation. Adam, who has a PhD in community participation theory, has worked in a variety of challenging industries: from the cutting edge of the social enterprise movement, in FMCG, branding and through to the healthcare sector where he worked to transform pathways and services.

Chris Arning, founder of boutique consultancy, Creative Semiotics, which helps business owners better manage the meaning of their brands. Chris has over 18 years experience in brands and insight, with previous clients including the BBC, Unilever, Netflix and BMW Mini. Chris is also the Co-founder of the global Semiofest (Celebration of Semiotic Thinking) event, and runs the MA in Brands & Meaning at Warwick University, while also mentoring in Visual Semiotics at School of Communication Arts.
