Having Difficult Conversations

There are certain conversations we dread. But with the right mindset and techniques to hand, these can become positive and transformative learning experiences.

Few people enjoy confrontation — but there are plenty of conversations where we're called on to have a difficult, potentially awkward conversation with someone; whether a colleague, direct report, boss or partner. And whoever it's with, and whatever the topic — there are key mindsets to get into, and skillsets to have to hand that will enable us to reframe what's awkward, as something positive all-round. Indeed, if handled correctly and purposefully, seemingly difficult conversations can become something rich in development.

As with any feedback situation we need to ensure we're prepared, rooting everything in observation, mindful of our triggers (and those of others) and with outcomes, objectives and next steps clearly in mind. We'll cover all of this in this focussed and positive session, leaving you well equipped for conversations you may be planning now or otherwise approaching on your horizon at work or home.

• Communicating from a point of observation

• Practical frameworks for approaching conversations

• Listening for meaning

• Getting from emotion triggers to problem solving

How the session will be structured:

We'll draw on some real-world scenarios, deconstructing situations so that we can evenly mix some theory and discussion with plenty of practical application.

Who the session's for:

Anyone wishing to better equip themselves with fresh and purposeful approaches to having honest and positive conversations with those around them.
