For Managers: Practicing a Coaching Approach

For Managers: Practicing a Coaching Approach

Thursday 31 October
11:00am12:30pmUK time

This session is for managers keen to continually practice their everyday coaching approach — actively identifying coachable moments, and accelerating the development of their team members within them, through practicable coaching behaviours.

From the range of styles available in our toolkit as modern managers, a coaching approach is arguably the one that should be reached for most in busy, collaborative and distributed teams.

And all the evidence shows that the modern employee really values the approach (at the right moments); with its emphasis on inclusion, problem solving and pulling in the perspectives of others. We all know that the days of 'command and control' leadership are long gone.

When managers master the art of everyday coaching and actively spot coachable moments (spoiler alert: they're everywhere), they build autonomy and the confidence to independently act in others. In turn, this gives us as managers time back. Time we can dedicate to higher-value tasks. Win win!

And in many ways the coaching approach enables other styles. Demonstrating that you've really listened to someone, for example, makes it much easier to be directive, and push for a certain course of action when time is tight.

In this collaborative, action-oriented and scenario-based session — led by a YCN coach-facilitator — we'll look at some of the reasons that coachable moments get missed; and arm ourselves with proven, practical tools for bringing an enquiry-led coaching approach into the conversations that merit one.

We'll bring lots of live conversational examples into the session, and practice together the art of question crafting — making sure everyone is building their question bank as we go.

And, as noted below, everyone joining will be asked to complete a priming, 20-minute digital mini-module ahead of the live session — as part of our Manager Foundations pathway.

Content we'll collaboratively cover

• Identifying coachable moments and the CAN mnemonic
• The why and how of active listening
• Question Crafting
• Types, styles and time-zoning questions
• The Push Vs Pull continuum
• Creating accountability for action

This live workshop forms part of our Manager Foundations programme. You'll find a digital mini-module on the Coaching Approach at the programme pathway — something to diarise spending 20 minutes working through ahead of the workshop session. It will help you join having covered some core concepts and feeling primed to collaboratively dig deeper.
