Photographer Greg Funnell has worked on a poignant new project in Africa with travel brand Away and the NGO Peace Direct.
Away has used its reach as a trendy travel brand to highlight the issues that Peace Direct tackle day in day out on the ground. Peace Direct works with small local NGOs that understand individual communities, and spends years nurturing relationships with them. Through the Away x Peace Direct partnership, an online platform has been created in order to shed light on the important work being done. With the belief that the best way outsiders can help is by supporting those on the inside already working for peace, they have built an interactive microsite that connects viewers directly.
Member Greg Funnell has contributed to this online platform by travelling to Nigeria, and photographing members of communities that have been affected by conflict. With nearly 10 years of experience working on NGO projects predominately in Central and West Africa, Greg has approached people and their stories with sensitivity, hoping to create images that are intimate rather than jarring.
Each location – from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Nigeria – has been given a distinct feel in terms of the grading and colour tones. The images aim to make the viewer feel like they are really there on the ground, reflecting the aims of the partnership itself. Used in large format and without any bordering across the site, they fully immerse viewers into the compelling stories.
