The aim of this session is to increase understanding of neurodiversity; providing people-managers with practical approaches to behavioural and environmental adjustments that will better support neurodivergent colleagues — and ultimately benefit everyone else in teams too.

Join a group of fellow people-managers for an interactive and enlightening session in which we'll build awareness about the concept of neurodiversity, explore specific aspects of neurodivergence, and equip ourselves with practical knowledge to support future conversations around disclosure and adjustments — and how to approach neuro-inclusive communication within their teams.

The session will be led by Dr. Anne Cockayne, alongside a YCN coach-facilitator, and will draw on Anne's extensive work in the field and PHD research into the relationships between managers and autistic team members.

Together we'll learn about the neurodiversity paradigm, neurodiverse characteristics and strengths, explore situations relating to hiring, managing performance, disclosing — as well as stimulating our thinking about what can count as adjustments.

By better understanding the concept of neurodiversity; and the behavioural and environmental adjustments we can all make to support current and future neurodivergent colleagues, partners and customers; we ultimately create more open and inclusive cultures to the benefit of everyone.

What we'll cover:

• Defining neurodiversity and the neurodiversity paradigm
• Specific neurodivergent conditions: Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia
• Neurodiversity and the Equalities Act of 2010
• Dealing with disclosure
• Reasonable adjustments and neuro-inclusion in recruitment & onboarding
• Positive stories and strategies for neuro-inclusion

How the session will be structured

Led by Dr. Anne Cockayne and a YCN coach-facilitator we'll combine some thought provoking exercises, expert insights and group conversation for sharing perspectives. And we'll facilitate conversation around some real-world case studies drawing on interactions between managers and neurodivergent team members. Deconstructing, replaying and working through them will allow for group exploration and discussion, and the practicing of neuro-inclusive communication skills.

Who the session is for

We've designed this session for people-managers, whether currently managing a neurodivergent team member or not, as well as EDI and HR professionals responsible for designing and implementing diversity and inclusion policies.
