A quintet of curious and purposeful questions, that can pull out powerful perspectives when interviewing someone for a role.

In her popular book The Making of a Manager, referenced and recommended in many of our own manager development programmes, Julie Zhuo draws on her own hard-earned lessons leading teams to share a playbook of purposeful points for others doing the same.

From the Art of Feedback, to Amazing Meetings, Nurturing Culture to Your First Three Months; each chapter is flush with practical guidance to go and apply. To support our emerging focus on effective and inclusive interviewing; here we share Julie’s five all-purpose questions, recommended to reveal valuable insights when we as managers come to interview new potential team mates.

1
What kind of challenges are interesting to you and why? Can you describe a favourite project?

This can reveal what a candidate is passionate about.

2
What do you consider your greatest strengths? What would your peers agree are your areas of growth?

This question gets both at a candidate’s self-awareness, and where there actual strengths and weaknesses might be.

3
Imagine yourself in three years. What do you hope will be different about you then compared to now?

This can create understanding around a candidate’s ambitions as well as how reflective and goal oriented they are.

4
What was the hardest conflict you’ve had in the past year? How did it end and what did you learn from the experience?

This provides a sense of how the candidate works with other people and how they approach conflict.

5
What’s something that’s inspired you in your work recently?

This sheds some light on what a candidate thinks is interesting or valuable.

Which of these questions would you most likely flex in a coming interview? And how might you answer them yourself if asked?
